Nyungwe National Park is located in southwestern Rwanda, approximately 220 kilometers from Kigali, a drive of about 5-6 hours. The park lies on the border with Burundi to the south and Lake Kivu and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west.
As one of Africa's oldest rainforests, Nyungwe covers an area of approximately 1,020 square kilometers of dense forest, ranging in altitude from 1,600 to 2,950 meters. It is characterized by steep, mountainous terrain with a network of hiking trails and is known for its remarkable biodiversity.
The park is a key part of the Albertine Rift, one of Africa's most important conservation areas, rich in endemic species. It features a variety of habitats including rainforest, bamboo forest, grasslands, swamps, and heath.
